| Arbogast, Johannes Arbogast -- Johannes Arbogast Born Sept. 9, 1703. The progenitor of a large branch of the Arbogast Family in the New World arrived on the English ship Edinburg Sept. 16, 1751 at the Port of Philadelphia, listed as Johannes Arbengast. He was a son of David (1645-1703) and Christina Diebold Arbogast (1662-1739). Johannes settled in the Bern Township area of Berks County with his second wife, Margaret Walter Arbogast (1716-?). He sired fourteen children including four sons with his first wife, Anna Margaret Burckler Arbogast (1706-1736). It is believed all his children were born in the family's native Germany before emigrating to America. Johannes died on Nov. 12, 1772 and was buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery by Rev. Christopher Emmanuel Schultz. The date and place of his wife's death are unknown. Several sons of Johannes are reported to have served in the Revolutionary War including John Arbogast (1739-1811)who served in Company 6 Fourth Battalion of the Berks County Militia under Capt. Conrad Eckert. Following the war, most of Johannes' family moved to Snyder County PA. where they contributed greatly to the development or that region. This Monument was erected by the descendants of Joahnnes Arbogast to mark the final resting place and honor the memory of a courageous pioneer who dared to face the dangers of the unknown for the benefit of those who would follow him.
