C. A. Unger, School Aide, Dies Suddenly
Calvin A. Unger secretary to Newto W. Geiss, county superintendent of schools, succumbed to a heart attack this morning at his home, 2026 Penn Ave., West Lawn. He was 73.
Unger's death was unexpected and came as a shock to his family and many friends. He attended to his duties as usual on Friday and this morning arose at his customary time. He was about to shave, preparatory to going to the county school office, when he was stricken. Medical aid was summoned but he died within a short time.
Born and reared on a farm at Strausstown, he entered the teaching profession as a young man and followed this career throughout his life. He was active in church and Sunday school work, was a teacher of vocal music for a time, was a bank director, a school director, and a leader in civic projects.
In 1918 he retired from teaching in the Strausstown grammar school to become a cleark under County Recorder of Deeds Jacob R. Meck. Four months later he was appointed secretary to the late Eli M. Rapp, then county superintendent of schools. He continued in that capacity under Dr. Alvin F. Kemp and with the present county superintendent, Newton W. Geiss.
He was a son of the late Alfred M. and Esther (DeTurk) Unger. He moved to Emmaus with his parents in 1888 and was graduated from the high school there in 1892. He taught for a while in a school near Stroudsburg and in 1893 took a special course at the former Keystone State Normal School at Kutztown.
Returned to Strausstown
The family returned to Strausstown and in 1894 he taught school in Jefferson Township. He was graduated from the normal school in 1896 and subsequently taught in Upper Tulpehocken Township schools until his appointment to the county office.
He served a term as justice of the peace in Upper Tulpehocken Township, and served as clerk at hundreds of public sales. For a time he taught an old-fashioned singing school and was also chorister at Zion's (Blue Mountain) Church.
He was instrumental in organizing the Strausstown Fire Company and was its first president. He also was president of the Strausstown Homecoming Association. He was a director of the Bernville National Bank and later of the Strausstown National Bank, relinquishing these positions after he moved to West Lawn. He served as a trustee of the Kutztown State Teachers College Alumni Loan Fund.
Helped organize church
He helped to organize Advent Lutheran Church and Sunday School in West Lawn. He served for a time as a deacon, and was chorister in the Sunday school until his death. He was a member of the Spring Township School Board for many years, and served some years as president of the board.
He took an active part in projects sponsored by the Berks County Sabbath School Association. Other organizations with which he was affiliated included Camp 664, P.O.A. of A., Strausstown; Camp 38 P.O. of A., Strausstown, and Williamson Lodge, 307, F. and A.M., Womelsdorf.
Surviving are his widow, Alice D. (Spengler) Unger; two daughters: Helen M., wife of Samuel Berger, West Lawn, and Carrie A., wife of Norman S. Spatz, of Union N.J.; one son, Earl A. Unger, of Pottsville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Lamm & Witman Funeral Home at Wernersville, Wednesday at 2 p.m. Officiating pastor will be the Rev. Ernest A. Weber, pastor of Advent Church. Burial will be made in Zion's Union Church Cemetery at Strausstown.
