- [S195] Correspondence, Reid Heilig (Reliability: 2), 26 Aug 2012.
Tom Spittler, co-author of Vol. 3, American Clockmakers & Watchmakers, of the series American Clocks, published by Arlington Book Co, Inc, 2001, is writing a revised edition to correct several errors among which is the Hendrick Heilig problem. He has recently bought from a Jack Wallace, Oswego, NY an early 1700s set of hand made brass works in the German style with a musical part. It consists of 19 bells, a wooden cylinder with pins that activate 19 hammers to play tunes, the number as now unknown, Tom said the making of this clock took several years so he feft like H. Heilig did not make many of this type. Tom lives in Ohio and his home phone number is 937 845 9032. If you decide to call him the best time is just after dust in Ohio. Tom sold the clock works to Walter Bailey of Owingsville, KY whose address is 250 West Main Street, 40360, phone number 606 674 2085 . Walter has the clock stored at present but has promised to make some pictures of it. I have a first refusal on any future sale of this clock. At present it is not working but seems to be complete. Walter has played with it some and has determined that it is a hand filed mechanism. There are wooden parts in keeping with the German concept of clock design. I have tried to get in touch with Jack Wallace but to no luck. I am interested in learning as much as possible about the provence of this clock. H. Heilig Hanover is scribed into the metal frame. I have not found out yet if Hanover is spelled with one or two Ns. I am not going to muddy the water with the fact that our Hinrich had a son Hinrich who might have lived long enough to have made this clock under his father's tutelage.

Hendrik Heilig, the founder of the family in Pennsylvania, was born in 1700, and in 1720 sailed from Amsterdam on the ship Polly. It is understood that he came from Hanover, Germany. He settled in Hanover Township, Montgomery County, and was a clockmaker and farmer. He married Susanna Rittenhouse and thus became the uncle of David Rittenhouse. He died in 1775 and together with his wife is buried in Methacton Mennonite Cemetery, Montgomery County.
