Sorry that there has been a delay in the Amanda Ellen Koon Heilig story. Amanda Ellen Koon , called Ellen by the family, was the daughter of Jacob Michael and Catherine Koon born March 25, 1866 near China Grove, NC. She had a brother Augustus Alexander, and at least 2 sisters only one of which I know the name:Alice Catherine who married Thomas Winders. She was a Lutheran and descended from Anton Kuhn who came to Pennsylvania from Walsdorf in southern Germany in the middle 1700s. He played a large role in organizing and building Organ Lutheran Church, our family's home church, down in the Dutch (meaning Deutsch or German) Second Creek area of Rowan County. He evidently came to that area just prior to the Revolution. The name Kuhn then became Koon or in a few branches Coon. I have very little information on Ellen until the Ghina Grove Newspaper reported that Orlando had caught a Koon under the Christmas tree at Grace Lutheran Church (meaning that they married) on December 25, 1882. Ellen was a strawberry blond (Aunt Cap had a lock of her mother's hair that she kept and showed me back in the late 50s.) Carl Albright , called "Strawberry" inherited this hair color from his grandfather, the brother of Ellen, Alexander Koon. Shortly the children started to come. Just where Orlando and Ellen were living at this time is not clear but I believe it was on the farm of her father who died shortly thereafter. Jacob Koon's farm of about 150 acres was divided between the 4 Koon children with Ellen getting 36 acres. Their first child was Etta. Shortly after her birth they sold their share of the Jacob Koon farm in order to go to Texas. They then by covered wagon migrated to the Mazur Ranch just north of Dallas , Texas where Orlando found work. Frank was born there and between a drought and Charlotte Emmeline running Daniel Monroe Bostain back across the creek to his family, they came back on the train. Aunt Ett said the only thing she remembered about the Texas time was her father Orlando coming back from getting the train tickets with a doll for her, her first one evidently. They arrived back in China Grove and took up farming the Heilig farm for Orlando's mother. At this time she Charlotte Emmeline has a daughter and 2 sons by Daniel Monroe Bostain to raise and needed help as Orlando's sister Julius Emmeline was just 14 years old and his older half sister Mary Catherine was living with her uncle William Job Heilig who was running the old Heilig Mill at Heilig's Pond near Organ Lutheran Church and was also post master there. Mary Catherine would shortly marry Elisha Waters, a Confederate Veteran who was considerably older than she. She evidently died of unknown cause shortly after this without any heirs. I will continue this narrative at some future date as my one fingered typing finger is killing me with so much hunting and pecking-but are not computers fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Reid
