    Biographical  Inventor and founder of Safe-Guard Corporation, Moved from upstate New York to the second block of West Montgomery Avenue, North Wales Pennsylvania after marriage to Josepha Happe. 
    Witness  Fifteen original photographs taken by Bell & Fischer, Philadelphia on August 8, 1919 of John Whitaker's Safe Guard Checkwriter Company Incorporated, Pierce and Linden Streets, Lansdale Pennsylvania Factory and workers have been donated to The Lansdale Historical Society in Alice May Whitaker Reyner Lutz's memory on November 18, 2017. The photos are: two 10 1/2 X 14 taken outside the building with about 78 men and 15 women, the second with the "New York Sales Force" with about 40 men, John in the middle of the shot, Nine 8X10s showing operations inside the factory, One 4 1/2 X 6 1/2 of John's Original set up bench, Three more 8X10s, 1. Sales Banquet ca 1920, 2 Check-Writer Photo, 3 Set up at a Sales Convention with six salesman. Alice donated the Gold Checkwriter that was used in Trade Shows to the Society through then Society President,Franny Blasť, before his death in 1999.

    Occupation  1895,General Electric Corporation, Schenectady New York, moved to North Wales Pennsylvania, Started the John Whitaker Manufacturing Company,1912, in The Weingartner Building at Walnut Street and the Reading Railroad. North Wales, PA Invented and Patented the Checkwriter, Shortly after moved to the former Freed mill building on Main Street at the Reading Railroad, North Wales. Opened a branch plant in Philadelphia in 1916. In September 1917 moved all factories to Lansdale Pennsylvania from North Wales Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Changed name to Safe-Guard Checkwriter Company. In 1919-20 doubled he size of the factory. In 1928 had about 160 workers. In 1946 changed name to Safeguard Corporation. John personally owned all of the checkwriter patents. The Company was sold in 1946 and John retired. Today Safeguard Business Systems is a distributor for Safeguard Corporation. In 1920 a Safe-Guard Checkwriter sold for $55.00, that would be $674.00 in todays money.
