As for Maude, she was legally adopted in 1898 (Berks County records and a news notice in the local paper on August 31, 1898) when she was nine years old by Franz Knauf (and his wife Sophia) but I am puzzled as to where she resided between her birth in 1889 and then -- possibly she was with the Knaufs but they didn't have legal rights to her.
