Doris Louise Berger Miller, October 19, 1925 -
George Frederick Miller (Fritz), - 2006

Doris was named after a little girl with curly hair Aunt Edna saw in a coach once. Uncle Albert, Aunt Edna and Doris visited Strausstown frequently; at least once a month. Another childhood memory--one year she got a free week at Camp Fire Girl camp for selling the most doughnuts—175 dozen! Doris graduated from high school in 1943, and from Kutztown in 1946, completing her college education in three years and three summers. She taught 7th and 8th grade geography, history and social studies at Exeter from 1946 through 1949, when she married George Frederick Miller on April 4.

Doris and Fritz met at the Post Office, sorting mail at Christmastime. They first lived in Lakewood, NJ and he taught chemistry at Lakewood High School. He was recalled back to the Air Force at the beginning of the Korean War in 1950; it paid more than teaching. He was in the service for 17 years. During that time they moved quite a bit. They started in Westover, Massachusetts, from where he helped to build a base in Greenland that supplied the North Pole where a “cold war” early warning system had been established.

Philip Berger Miller was born on April 19, 1952, in Massachusetts, while Fritz was sleeping off his latest trip to Greenland. In August they bought a house in Wyomissing Hills where Doris and Philip lived while Fritz went to Saudi Arabia. In February of 1953, the wing that was in Saudi Arabia was moved to Bermuda, so on February 28th they moved to Bermuda, where Frederick Daniel Miller was born on March 7. They were in Bermuda for two years, then they came back and went to McGuire, in New Jersey. They were there for two years, and then were sent to Palm Beach, where they stayed for three years. When they transferred to Oklahoma City in 1959, they lost everything in a van fire—this was the second time this had happened—the first time was going to Palm Beach. The story made the newspapers and the Paul Harvey radio show. They were in Oklahoma City a year, and then Fritz went into the missile program, thinking they would get stationed in Germany, but instead they moved to Denver for about nine months, then Orlando for a short time, then Fritz was sent to Korea, while Doris and the boys lived in Shillington. Grant Lee, named for the Civil War books Fritz was reading at the time, was born January 1, 1962; Fritz returned in March. After school was over for the year, they moved to Aldus, Oklahoma, the southwestern corner of the state, where they were for three years. Then they moved to Blyville, Arkansas. He retired and they moved back to Shillington, where Fritz worked at Luden’s in Reading until 1985, and Doris did some substitute teaching.

Philip retired from the Navy and worked for a time at the PX in Fort Eustace, VA, just south of Williamsburg. His degree is from Pitt. He married Alice Hicks in May of 1978, and their daughter Alexis Hicks was born April 18, 1981. Another child, Matthew, was born in April of 1979 and died in March of 1980. Currently, he and Alice have purchased an RV and are moving west to where Alexis, following the family tradition of military service, is stationed

Frederick is currently between jobs although previous ones included work for Prudential in financial planning and in marketing for Nielsson. (Actually, he makes out very well caddying on the golf course!) His degree is from Bowling Green. He married Carol Wells in 1975; they have two daughters, Jane Leslie, a 5th grade teacher, was born February 18, 1978 and was married in 2004; Lisa Anne, a college student, was born November 23, 1980. Their first daughter, Beth, was born on October 2, 1976 and died in March of 1977 of heart complications from Down Syndrome.

Grant has a degree from Elizabethtown and is currently working in sales with Neoplan, a German bus company. He married Robin Ann Beisswanger June 23, 1989 and they have five children: Daniel Grant, born December 6, 1991, Christopher Lee, born January 11, 1993, Meredith Ann, born January 30, 1998, Grant Douglas, born February 21, 2000, and most recently Alex.
