I borrowed Alice Forsyth's book "German Pest Ships 1720-1721" which lists families on 5 ships that sailed to Mississippi. Heinrich was not on the passenger list. |

- There is confusion about Heinrich which perhaps can be resolved by looking at actual church records, rather than abstracts. Heinrich reportedly immigrated in 1720 to Mississippi and also reportedly died in Dühren. The 1717-1720 Mississippi Company brought about 2000 Germans to the Missippi River Valley. The endeavor was promoted by John Law, a Scottish investor, who published a pamphlet determined to recruit Swiss and German artisans and laborers which described Louisiana in glowing terms. This project was a failure because the land was too swampy to be developed. Perhaps Heinrich determined the colony was not a place to bring the family he left behind and subsequently returned to Germany.
However, the death year is suspicious to me. A lot of Germans died of the plague in France after leaving home and before the ships left for Mississippi. I have not found any variation of Heinrich Löwenstein on the Mississippi ship lists. Historian Jay Schexnaydre writes, "One thing that Al Robichaux has found are the names of many relatives of our German Coast Ancestors that died at Lorient, France. Fortunately, the Département of Morbihan (where Lorient is located) has "en ligne" / online records of the l'Etat Civil and Registres Paroissiaux. I'd consult those burial records in the local church of Lorient to see if he's listed." I haven't been able to navigate the Lorient records. Perhaps Heinrich died at Lorient, but was not reported to his family in Dühren; son George came to America, went to Mississippi to find him, found he died in France, reported his findings to family back home, at which time the priest entered the 1737 death year with no other information; George then travelled to and settled in Pennsylvania.
