Virginia Elizabeth Umberger, daughter of James and Matilda Ann Umberger, was born in Rural Retreat, Wyth(e) County, Virginia, May 11, 1867, and was crowned in the land immortal from the home of her son, Harry, at 9:30 Saturday evening, April 1, 1950, at the beautiful age of 82 years, 10 months and 20 days. She moved to Pawnee county, Kansas, Dec. 2, 1887, and was united in marriage to John William Fertig, Sept. 24, 1889. To this union four sons were born. She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers, one sister, and by her youngest son, Harvey Sylvester, who entered the life beyond only six weeks before her departure. At the age of nine, because of the ill health of her mother, she became a little mother to her brothers and sisters. When 14 years of age she gave her heart to God and was affiliated with the Baptist church. After her marriage she became a charter member of the Lincoln Methodist church and when it was disbanded, they attended the Methodist church in Larned. After the death of her husband about five years ago, she moved her membership to the Radium Methodist church, where she attended as much as her failing health would permit. As her eyesight failed and physical darkness gathered around her, the light of God's spirit and grace illuminated her heart and soul. It was a benediction to visit with her. She was patient, kind, unselfish, and thoughtful to others. One of her favorite poems after which she tried to pattern her life is entitled "Others." Mrs. Fertig is survived by three of her sons, Charley Stephen, Roy Joseph, Harry Lockard; by her youngest sister, Mrs. Laure E. Warren, Winfield; ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. She selected John 14 as the scripture lesson for her service and named the following as pall bearers: Bob Jost, Ansel Blakely, Earl Fertig, Abner Zook, Roy Monger and Franklin Miller.
