John William Fertig was born on June 21, 1861 in Snyder County, Pennsylvania. He was the second son of John Joseph Fertig and Catherine Welker. John William was named after his father, John Joseph Fertig, as well as his grandfather, John Anthony Fertig. John William was raised in Penn Township, Snyder County.
On March 4, 1879, John William relocated to Pawnee County, Kansas with his father's family. Ten years later, John was united in marriage with Virginia Elizabeth "Jenny" Umberger on September 21, 1889. Jenny was born on May 11, 1867 in Rural Retreat, Wythe County, Virginia, the daughter of James Lockard Umberger and Matilda Ann Steffie. JOhn William and Jenny were honored and blessed with the birth of four sons: Charles Stephen, Sr., Roy Joseph, Harry Lockhardt and Harvey Sylvester.
John purchased an 80 acre tract of farmland, the east half of the northeast quarter of Section 15, Township 22 (Logan Township), Range 15. His father, John Joseph, owned the west half of the same quarter section and gave the property to John William as an inheritance. John Joseph had homesteaded on the quarter section immediately north of John William's tract of land. John William remained on his property and farmed for the rest of his life.
John and Jenny were both believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. The following memories were written by Irene Ruth (Fertig) Jost, granddaughter of John William :
Grandmother was less than five feet tall, but had a huge heart of love which made her unique. She was a most gentle loving woman. Called Aunt Jenny by her nieces and nephews. Everyone loved to come to their farm to enjoy southern hospitality. My Grandmother was blind from Glaucoma her last years. She loved my reading her Bible to her. Uncle Harry also became blind in old age for doctors did not understand Glaucoma and the removal of cataracts.
The driveway approach to their house divided to become a circle drive which enclosed the cedar and lilac bushes. There were nine buildings on their farm yard. The three bedroom house, a barn (for horses), a cattle barn, brooder-houses (for chicks), hen-houses, granary, repair building, well-house, out-house. My grandfather was a well-organized man who kept the whole farm "picture perfect." Across the road from their place was homesteaded by my Great Aunt Mary whom he helped a good deal, I understand. My Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother lived with my Great Aunt Mary. A corner of their land was allocated for a cemetery for the Fertig family. However, many Fertigs have been interred in other cemeteries in this area.
John went home to be with the Lord on March 26, 1945 at the Nulf Convalescent Home in Pawnee County, at the age of 83 or 84. The funeral service was conducted by Reverend H. N. Bower, Evangelical minister of Offerle and Reverend Henry Grusing of Radium. Jenny passed on to her eternal home on April 1, 1950 at the age of 82. Their bodies are both buried at the Larned Cemetery in Larned.
