  [S245] Ladies of Reading, Barbara R Goda, p. 36. Rosa Catherine Nicolls belonged to the illustrious Muhlenberg family of Pennsylvania. Her father was Henry Augustus Muhlenberg, Berks Congressman from 1853 to 1859. She married Gustavus A. Nicolls in 1846 and spent much of her life in charitable and social pursuits. The Reading Ladies' Volunteer Association is considered by many historians to be the first one formed in the nation to help soldiers in the Civil War.
