Reta J. Kunkleman, 87, formerly of Centerport, Leesport and Fleetwood, died Sunday night, May 1, 2011, in the Odd Fellows Home, Middletown, where she has been a resident since February 2010.
She was the wife of John A. Kunkleman, Fleetwood, whom she married December 6, 1943, on the Desert Training Center, San Bernardino, CA.
Born in Mohrsville, she was the daughter of the late William G. and Mary (Freeman) Naftzinger. She was a 1941 graduate of Ontelaunee Vocational School.
Reta served more than 35 years in the West Leesport and Leesport Post Offices and was the Leesport Postmaster from 1970 to 1984. She served two one-year terms as president of the Berks County Postmasters Association and was active in the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. She also was a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees.
Reta was a member of Lady Colfax Rebekah Lodge No. 182, Leesport. She was past noble grand and served many other offices in her more than 55 years of membership. She was a member of the Rebekah Assembly of Pennsylvania.
Reta also was a charter member of Leesport Auxiliary No. 2, Ladies Auxiliaries Patriarchs Militant, and served a term as its president.
After John retired in 1985, the couple began 21 years of travel. They visited Alaska and Hawaii; toured much of Canada; traveled to Iceland, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand.
Reta and John made 25 cruises on the Paddlewheel Steamboat Delta Queen, covering all the rivers in the "heartland of America." They also did cruises on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Northwestern U.S., and up the St. Lawrence River. Reta was a member of the Paddlewheel Steamboatin' Society of America.
Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter: Joanne C. (Kunkleman), wife of Kerry A. Drake, Warrensville, Lycoming County; two grandsons: William K. Drake, husband of Audrey, Yaphank, NY; and Steven S. Drake, Williamsport; two great-grandsons: Logan W. and Alexander J. Drake; and one sister: Carolyn (Naftzinger), widow of John A. Manwiller, Fleetwood.
She was predeceased by a sister: Dorothy (Naftzinger) Grogg.
Services will be on Friday at 2:00 pm from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial will be in Leesport Cemetery. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Thursday 6:00 to 8:00 pm with Lady Colfax Rebekah Lodge No. 182 service at 7:00 pm.
