Paul W. "Whitey" Kerschner, 91, of Blandon, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2017 in his residence. He was the husband of Anna Mae (Angstadt) Kerschner, they were married on June 1, 1956. Last year they celebrated 61 years of marriage.
Born on September 12, 1926, in Maidencreek, the son of the late Irvin Kerschner and Della (Sterner) Kerschner.
He was a U S Army veteran of World War II.
Paul had worked for Glen - Gery Brick, Reading, retiring in 1984.
Whitey was popular stock car driver, starting his career in the 1950s, competing at numerous eastern dirt tracks. Whitey has the distinction of being one of only eight drivers to have won a feature in both flatheads and modifieds at the Reading Fairgrounds. In 2015, he was honored by the Checkered Flag Fan Club being presented the Dick "Toby" Tobias award, and in 2016, being inducted into the Reading Fairgrounds "Home of Champions." Whitey was a lifetime member of the Reading Fairgrounds Racing Historical Society.
His other interests were fishing, hunting and at age 89 he shot his last buck.
The thing that will be missed most by anyone that knew him was his wide smile, and the beautiful sparkle of his blue eyes every time his daughter Paula was in his presence.
Survived by his wife, Anna Mae; daughter, Paula J. (Kerschner), wife of Clifford G. Kline, of Fleetwood; daughter, Roseanne (Kerschner), wife of William Zimmerman; and son, Barry L. Kerschner, of Leesport. Also 3 grandchildren; 1 stepgrandchild; 6 great -grandchildren; and 2 stepgreat-grandchildren. Other survivors are four sisters: Fem M. (Kerschner), wife of Raymond Stricker, Verna A. (Kerschner), wife of Earl Moser, Ruth M. (Kerschner), wife of Sterling Schappell, and Dorothy (Kerschner), wife of Paul Heckman.
Paul was preceded in death by four brothers: Curtis J. Kerschner, Clarence Kerschner, Harvey Kerschner and Mahlon A. Kerschner; and one sister, Edna S. (Kerschner) Hoffert.
Viewing will be held Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. in Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, Inc., 117 West Main Street, Fleetwood. Private burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens.
