Frank H. Wetzel Frank H. Wetzel, age 75, passed away quietly March 8, 2001.
He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 49 years, Jean; daughter, Amy Wetzel Messick of Waukesha, WI; son, F. Todd Wetzel, M.D. of Chicago, IL; and grandson, Colin Todd Wetzel of Evanston, IL.
Dr. Wetzel received his BS degree from the University of Illinois and his MS and PhD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He retired from Hercules, Inc as a vice president in 1991 after 40 years of employment.
Dr. Wetzel was continuously involved in a wide variety of civic and health care activities as a volunteer for nearly 50 years. He served as a 2-term trustee of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in the early 1950s. A bit later as a member of the Board of Governors of the Greater Wilmington Development Council, he chaired the education committee and the consultant task group that resulted in the first campus of the Delaware Technical and Community College being located in downtown Wilmington rather than in Stanton. He was a member of the board of directors of the American Heart Association of Delaware for 15 years and served 2 terms as both president and chair of that board. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Wilmington Friends School for 7 years, and president of the Home & School Association for 4 years. He was a member of the board of trustees of Beaver College in Glenside, PA for 13 years, serving as vice chair the last 3 years. He served on both the personnel and tennis committees of the Wilmington Country Club of which he and his wife were members.
Following his retirement in 1991, he was the Quality Executive in Residence for the Medical Center of Delaware for 5 years, and quality coach for the American Cancer Society during that period. The ACS received the Delaware Quality Award at that time. Subsequently, he served in the same capacity for Patterson Schwartz Real Estate.
Over 8 years through 1998, Dr. Wetzel was a drummer in both the Newark Dixie Ramblers and the Music Masters. He had been devoted to tennis for more that 25 years, earning a 4.0 USTA rating.
Dr. Wetzel served as a carrier pilot in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
Funeral arrangements are private. Interment will be in Berks County, PA.
In lieu of flowers, Frank suggested, if possible, providing a unit of blood to the Blood Bank at Christiana Hospital from which Frank received over 100 units. Alternatively, donations to either Beaver College/Arcadia University, Glenside, PA or the Hematology Section of the Christiana Care Foundation are suggested.
