Clifford I. Mengel, 89, formerly of Schuylkill Haven, passed away Tuesday at Orwigsburg Center.
Born in Wayne Township, May 21, 1923, he was a son of the late William and Edna M. Schaeffer Mengel.
He was a 1942 graduate of Pottsville High School.
Clifford served in the Army as a private in World War II.
He attended St. John's United Church of Christ, Schuylkill Haven.
He was employed as a police officer at Schuylkill Haven Borough for 27 years, retiring in 1983.
Clifford was a life member of Rainbow Hose Company, a life member of FOP., Perseverance Lodge No. 21, Harrisburg, Tall Cedar of Lebanon No. 50, Page Lodge No. 205, where he was a past master.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Batdorf Mengel; two brothers and two sisters.
Clifford is survived by two daughters, Sherry Alford, Westville, N.J., and Marie Bartolet, Portland, Ore.; two sons, Neal Mengel, husband of Donna, Orlando, Fla., and David Mengel, husband of Leanne, Auburn; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Geschwindt-Stabingas Funeral Home Inc., Schuylkill Haven, with the Rev. Brian Reading officiating. A viewing will be held from 1 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven.
