Franklin W. Ruth Jr., 91, a resident of Lykens, passed away April 11, 2009, in The Manor at Susquehanna Village, Millersburg.
Franklin was a business executive, family man and a Penn State fan.
After earning his bachelor's degree in commerce and finance at Penn State in 1939, he was an accountant in the Pennsylvania Treasury Department and later in accounting firm in Harrisburg before moving to Lykens in 1944 and becoming an accountant for Reiff & Nestor Co.
He later became general manager, secretary and treasurer for that company, as well as several other sister companies, until he retired in 1982.
Franklin also served eight years on the board of trustees at Penn State, including the executive committee; director and later president of the former Miners Bank of Lykens; chairman of the Upper Dauphin Area High School building authority; and a director and later chairman of the board of Capital Blue Cross for eight years.
He also served as director, secretary and treasurer of several charitable foundations.
He was a life member of the Pennsylvania State University Alumni Association; 75-year member of the Bernville Grange; and a member of Ashlar Lodge No. 570 F&AM; Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Forest No. 125, Millersburg; and Liberty Hose Company No. 2.
He enjoyed playing golf and Penn State football.
Franklin was born in Dayton, Ohio, on Oct. 14, 1917, and moved with his family to Bernville in 1918.
He was preceded in death by his father, the Rev. Dr. Franklin W. Ruth, who served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Senate for 30 years; his mother, Florence U. (Iobst) Ruth; an infant son, David; sisters Florence Hiester and Dorothea Douple; and brothers Robert Ruth, Richard Ruth and Donald Ruth.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Pearl S. (Showers) Ruth, Lykens; two daughters, Betsy R. Snyder, and her husband, Derle, Harrisburg; and Pamela R. Fisher, and her husband, Mike, Atlanta; and one son, Franklin W. Ruth III, and his wife, Pam, Dauphin.
Other survivors include two grandchildren, Karen Snyder Quick, and her husband, Jeff, Mount Zion, Ill.; and Sean Ruth, Dauphin; a step grandson, Scot Benoit, and his wife, Sarah, Enola; four step great-grandchildren: Paul Giles, Deanna Quick, Cayden Quick and Logan Quick.
There are also two sisters, Rhoda Berliner, Pittsburgh; and Anna Bubbenmoyer, Reading; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Saturday from 9 to 9:55 a.m. in John R. Shultz Funeral Home, 406 Market St., Lykens, followed by Liberty Hose Company services at 10 a.m., Ashlar Lodge services at 10:15 a.m. and Franklin's funeral service beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home, with Pastor Carl E. Slough officiating. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
