Capt. Robert B. Heilig, a retired United States Navy captain and former Mount Joy resident, died of natural causes Feb. 24 in the University of California at San Diego Medical Center.
Heilig, who was 90, lived at 8270 Caminito Maritimo, La Jolla, Calif.
A career military officer, he graduated from the former Mount Joy High School in 1927, the U.S. Naval Academy in 1931, and the U.S. Naval Post-Graduate School in 1938.
During World War II he served as gunnery officer aboard the USS Chester in the Pacific theater. During the Korean War he was captain of the USS Rogers.
Also during his career he was captain of the USS Adirondack; logistics planning officer for the Bureau of Naval Ordnance in Washington, D.C.; commanding officer of the Los Angeles-based Convair-Pomona; inspector general of the Western Sea Frontier, extending from San Diego to Alaska to Hawaii; and commanding officer of the Concord Naval Ammunition Depot in Concord, Calif.
He retired in 1961 after 34 years in the Navy.
Heilig was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mount Joy. Also, he was a member of the Naval Academy Alumni Association.
He was married to Christine Rush Heilig. His previous wives were the late Mildred Wimer Heilig and the late Mildred Garcia Heilig.
Born in Mount Joy, he was a son of the late Dr. W.R. and Pauline Bube Heilig.
Surviving besides his wife are two stepsons, William C. Gilmore of Portland, Ore., and Edmond E. Garcia Jr. of Charlottesville Va.; a stepdaughter, Lucinda Zutes of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren; two brothers, Alois B. of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and James B. of Mount Joy; and a sister, Pauline B. Duke of Buffalo, N.Y.
