Pauline M. "Polly" (nee Mattern) Stevens, 91, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at her home in Harrisonburg, Virginia, surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Paul C. and Beryl (Cupples) Mattern of Osceola Mills, Pennsylvania. Born on February 22nd, 1926 she graduated from Osceola Mills High School, Class of '44, where she served as class secretary and was voted as the "Most Popular Classmate."
Her whole life was lived with those same feelings from all who knew her. Dancing was her first love and she found success in the many dance contests where she wore the crown.
In 1949 Polly married Donald E. Stevens and they had two children, Joan Leslie and Scott Paul.
Prior to living in Harrisonburg, she lived in Clearfield, Pennsylvania for ten years and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) as a payroll clerk in the Clearfield office. She then moved to Exton, Pennsylvania for the next forty-five years. Polly retired from the National Liberty Corp in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in 1985 to spend more time with her family, travelling extensively in Europe, Hawaii, and the Caribbean as well as the United States. In addition to her parents who preceded her in death, Polly was a loving sister to Betty, Lois, and Ronald. She gave a kidney to Ronald allowing him to live another thirteen years to see his children marry and have a family. It was her swan song and a gift of love that she shared with so many others during her entire life. Polly was the last surviving member of her family.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Scott Paul Stevens and a daughter by marriage, Dr. Kathryn "rYn" (Monger) Stevens of Harrisonburg and a grandson Christopher Roy of Columbia, Maryland.
Polly was a dedicated Christian and a lifetime member of the Osceola Mills Methodist Church and a fifty-five year member of Grove United Methodist Church of Exton, Pennsylvania. The family will be receiving relatives and friends from 10 to 10:45 am on Saturday, April 29th at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, where her service will be held at 11 am, officiated by Pastor Barbara Housley. Interment will be in Grove United Methodist Cemetery, West Chester. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Polly's memory to the American Cancer Society, Philadelphia Office, 1626 Locust St., Philadelphia, PA 19103 or by visiting www.cancer.org.
