John A. Smith, 88, of Mohrsville, passed away Tuesday, January 5th, at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading. John was born in Paxinos, PA on July 1, 1932, a son of the late Ida M. (Schlegel) and George I. Smith. He was the husband of Lydia L. (Geissler) Smith. John was predeceased by his first wife June E.(Hess), she died Nov. 17, 2000. He was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church, Reading, where he sang in choir and was a member of the senior club. John graduated from the Reading High School, in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. John was an electrician for Dick Linderman Electric; he retired from Reading Electric, he was an electrician for 43 years. He was a member of St. John?s Lodge #435; Rajah Shrine where he sang in the Raja Shrine Chanters, Lifetime member of Northeast Rod and Gun, and a member of Pikeville Township Sportsman Assoc. John is survived by a daughter, Michele J., wife of Shawn McCartney; a son, Michael J., husband of Sheila Smith; and a step daughter, Beth A, wife of Carl Frey. John is also survived by a sister, Anna Seidel and by 2 grandchildren: Erin and Stephanie; 2 step grandsons: Zachary and Jared; and 2 great grandchildren Dion and Kaeden. He was predeceased by step son Shawn Sievert, sister Kathryn Hill, and brothers Robert, Charles and William. Services are private at the convenience of family. The Sanders Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 1501 North 11th Street, Reading, is in charge of the arrangements.
