Our Family’s 20th Century History in Biographies .. 10

Jacob J. Unger (Uncle Jake) 1866-1945, age 79, buried in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading
Sallie K. (Kate) Strauss Unger, died 12/17/?2, age 41, buried at Zion Blue Mountain, Strausstown
Kate Hiester Leinbach Unger, 1876-1957, buried in Charles Evans Cemetery

Uncle Jake was 10 years older than Grandpa Unger and didn’t look at all like him—Uncle Jake was skinny! He was well educated, probably at Kutztown (Keystone) Normal School. He became the principal of Emmaus High School, then supervising principal of the East Stroudsburg schools and later County Superintendent of the Cumberland County, New Jersey schools. He retired in Vineland, NJ. He had three sons with his first wife; when she became ill, her niece (also Kate) came to take care of her, and married Uncle Jake after the first Kate’s death. The second Kate was pretty and talkative.

The three sons were Willis, Ellwood and Paul. Willis was well known to his cousins in Strausstown. His wife was Cornelia, from Vineland, (a lovely person, according to Mom) and they had two sons, Roy, an art teacher, and Jimmy, who graduated from Annapolis and then went down in a submarine during WWII. Willis had a very good sense of humor—a very funny person. He was an engineer on a train, and lived in Long Branch, NJ.

Ellwood became a weatherman in Indiana—his wife’s name was Betty (Mom has some silk rose pins made by her), his sons were John and Wayne. Wayne moved to Miami, FL.

Paul died young, although he was old enough to be married.
