Alice E. Schappell, 91, formerly of Hamburg, died Oct. 3, 2007, at 11:15 a.m. in ManorCare Health Services, Muhlenberg Township, where she had resided since 2005.
Alice was predeceased by her husband, Roy R. Schappell, on Nov. 25, 1980.
Born in Breinigsville, Lehigh County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey E. and Estella C. (Fritz) Bortz.
She was employed for 27 years by Hamburg Knitting Mills and later for six years by the Hamburg Center, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of First United Church of Christ, Hamburg; the Hamburg and Shoemakersville senior citizens groups and the Virginville Grange.
Alice was a great baker and candy maker, and her treats were enjoyed by many.
Surviving are a sister, Shirley M., wife of Earl Smith, Kutztown; and three brothers: Harold P. Bortz, Lititz; Paul H. Bortz, Kutztown; and Arthur H. Bortz, Hamburg.
Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home Inc., 40 S. Fourth St., Hamburg. Friends may call Friday 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home, Off-street parking is provided at 37 S. Fourth St., directly across from the funeral home.
