GERVIS GARDNER HILL, 90, of 910 Lilac St., Westgate Terrace Apartments, Indiana, died Sunday, July 18,1982, at the Indiana Hospital.
A son of the Rev. George Jacob and Frances Davis Trussel Hill, he was born March 8,1892, in Harpers Ferry, W. Va.
He was preceded in death in 1942 by his first wife, Lula Mildred Heck of .Williamsport,Pa. He is survived by his second wife, Beulah Montrose Shuster of Jeannette RD 1, whom he married in 1943. Also surviving are two sons, the Rev. George G. Hill of Armonk, N.Y., and James W. Hill. Slate College, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Charles W. (Virginia) Cornett, Fresno, CA; six grandchildren, and three great-granddaughters.
Mr. Hill was a pioneer in the field of business education. He received a B.A. degree from Western Maryland College and the M.M. degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
After graduating from Western Maryland,he taught business education at Dickinson Seminary in Williamsport, Pa., and at Goldey Business College in Wilmington, Del.
He came to Indiana State Normal School in 1919 and established the state's first Department of Business Education which became the model for many other departments in the United States and abroad. He directed the department for 37 years until his retirement in 1956.
He was a member of the National Education Association, the Pennsylvania State Eduction Association, the Pennsylvania Business Education Association,and the Tri-Slate Business Education Association.
He published and lectured widely and in 1951 published one of the first textbooks in the business education field. For 15 years after his retirement, he taught accounting in the IUP Community Service Course Series.
He was honored by the Susquehanna University which awarded him an honorary M.B.Ed, degree; by the PEBA which awarded him the Leading Business Education Award; and by IUP which awarded him a Citation for Distinguished Service in 1979.
Mr. Hill was a member of the Calvary United Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years during which time he served as a ruling elder, trustee and member of official boards for 40 years.
He was a Bible Class teacher and was also president of the Men's Association of the Kittanning Presbytery, a member of the National Council of Presbyterian Men, and a director of the New Life Movement of the Presbyterian Church.
He was a charter member of Benjamin Franklin F.&A.M. lodge No. 753 in Indiana a past president of the Indiana Kiwanis Club and a lieutenant governor and international officer of Kiwanis International-He was also active for many years in Indiana County sportsmen's associations.
He was a member of the governor's original Unemployment Compensation Board. He was also active in the Pennsylvania State Civil Service Commission, served as Indiana County director of Civil Defense, served, on the Indiana County
Fair Board and was secretary of the Indiana Police Civil Service Commission.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Robinson-Lytle's of Indiana. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m.and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be
held at the Calvary United Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday With the Rev. Richard D. Adams officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakland Cemetery
