William Altenderfer Burkey of Easton, Md., retired Hamburg company president and former borough councilman, died April 22 in William Hill Manor, Easton.
Burkey, 90, formerly of Hamburg, was predeceased by his first wife, Claudia (Barleon) Burkey, on June 7, 1995, and by his second wife, Mary (Hester) Burkey, in May 2002.
He joined the family-owned Burkey Underwear Co. in Hamburg in 1936 and served as president from 1957 until his retirement and the sale of the business in 1969.
Burkey was elected twice to borough council and served as president in the early 1940s.
Born in Hamburg, he was a son of the late William D. and Sallie (Altenderfer) Burkey.
Burkey was a 1929 graduate of Hamburg High School and a 1930 graduate of Haverford Preparatory School. He was a 1934 graduate of Yale University, New Haven, Conn.
He served as an adviser to the War Production Board in 1942 and was Hamburg Civil Service commissioner from 1941 to 1949.
Burkey was a past president of the Rotary Club of Hamburg. He was master of Vaux Lodge 406, F&AM, Hamburg, in 1941.
Burkey was a director of the Hamburg Savings & Trust Bank for more than 40 years.
He served two terms as president of the Manufacturers Association of Berks County. He was a past president of the National Association of Knit Goods Manufacturers and a long-time director of the National Underwear Institute of America.
He built an electric automobile in the early 1900s that is now in the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles.
Burkey was one of the founders of the Eastern Pennsylvania Sports Car Club.
He was a past president of the Berks County Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
Burkey was a past trustee of St. Joseph Hospital, Reading.
Surviving are three nephews.
Graveside services will be Friday at 4:30 p.m. in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg. The Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Hamburg, is in charge of local arrangements.
