Raymond Baxter, 87, of Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center, Narvon, formerly of 1298 Reading Road, Bowmansville, died Friday at home after a lengthy illness.
He worked 39 years for Blue Ball National Bank, retiring in 1984 as vice president of lending.
Baxter worked for three years at Hartings Bakery, Bowmansville, before joining the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He served as a tech sergeant from 1943 until his discharge in 1945.
During his service, he flew 35 missions over Germany as a member of the 379th Bomber Group, 8th Air Force.
His memberships included Allegheny Evangelical Lutheran Church, Knauers; Lancaster County Bankers Association, for which he served one year as president, three years as secretary and 21 years as treasurer; AMVETS, New Holland; New Holland Veterans of Foreign Wars; and Brecknock Township and Eastern Lancaster County school boards.
He also was a member of Bowmansville Youth Baseball League, which he served as a coach in the 1960s; and Trinity Lutheran Church, New Holland, where he was president in 1969.
Born in Churchtown, he was the son of the late Jason D. and Elizabeth Bewley Baxter.
He was married to Elsie Troutman Baxter, who died Aug. 20.
Surviving are a daughter, Joan L. Baxter, married to James Wetzel of Hanover; a son, William J., married to Dawn Walter Baxter of Mohnton; four grandchildren; and a brother, Harry, married to Barbara Baxter of Manheim.
He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Earl.
