George M. Burkholder, 87, formerly of Earl Township, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at his home in South Newton Township.
He was born in Ephrata Township to the late Paul and Annie (Martin) Burkholder and was the husband of the late Elizabeth H. (Gehman) Burkholder, who passed away in 2008.
George was a member of Martindale Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference and was a retired farmer.
George is survived by 4 sons, Henry G., husband of Mabel (Newswanger) Burkholder of Thorp, WI, Weaver G., husband of Ruth (Martin) Bukholder of Walnut Bottom, Eli G., husband of Vera (Hoover) Burkholder of Newville, Isaac G., husband of Anna (Hoover) Burkholder of Thorp, WI; 6 daughters, Mabel G., wife of Menno Nolt of New Holland, Mary G., wife of Lawrence Nolt of Withee, WI, Elizabeth G., wife of Alvin Martin of Withee, WI, Ella G., wife of Raymond Hoover of Kutztown, Anna G., wife of Elmer Leid of Fortuna, MI, Lucy G., wife of Leroy Sensenig of Penn Yan, NY; 77 grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; 149 great grandchildren; 34 step great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Paul, husband of Elizabeth (Stauffer) Burkholder of Fleetwood, Jonas, husband of Bertha (Zimmerman) Burkholder of Stanley, NY; 3 sisters, Lizzie, wife of Weaver Leid of Ephrata, Ada, wife of Aaron Zimmerman of Dundee, NY, Susanna, wife of Ben Shirk of Penn Yan, NY.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ezra, Isaac, and Menno Burkholder; sisters, Annie Burkholder, Maria Burkholder, and Minnie Hoover; 3 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and 5 step great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Menno and Mabel Nolt residence, 282 Ranck Church Rd., New Holland. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Nolt residence with further services at 9:30 a.m. from Martindale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference), Earl Township. Interment will take place in the adjoining church cemetery.
